Academy Workshops

Don't want to commit to a full day at camp? Try our exciting Academy Workshops. Taught by experts in their field, these exciting mini-courses are sure to please! Most camps are one week long from 9-11 am Monday-Thursday.

Rock Band Camp*             

Session 1:              June 21-July 9
Session 2:              July12-July 30

Individual music lessons are great, but it's no fun playing alone. Led by Howie Anderson, professional musician, Rock Band Camp offers the beginning musician an opportunity to be in a band setting playing with other musicians.

The curriculum teaches all aspects of being in a rock band. During three weeks students will form a band, learn songs, rehearse, play a live rock concert and learn the importance of teamwork and leadership skills. All guitarists, bass players, drummers, keyboard players and singers are welcome.  Join us this summer and you will be performing for friends, family, and invited guests at the end of your three-week Rock Band Camp experience. 

*All campers must be between the ages of 10-15 years old and have had a minimum of one year of lessons on their instrument.

Magic and Mayhem 

Session 1:              Aug. 9-12

Taught by professional magician Shawn McMaster, students will learn some of the basics and the history of the art of magic. Amaze your friends and family with tricks using special props and everyday items, while building personal confidence and dexterity.  Throughout the week long class, students will bring home 5-6 tricks to amaze and delight friends and family.

Shawn McMaster has been studying magic for 40 years, and has been a professional performer for 18 of those years. He has appeared in clubs and theaters across the country including Las Vegas, off-Broadway, the world-famous Magic Castle in Hollywood, and on television including the recent Fox TV show "Masters of Illusion." He is also an author of many books and articles on magicians and the art of magic.

Horsemanship

Where Trails Begin Ranch, Chatsworth

Come join us for a fun outdoor experience with horses!  This academy focuses on beginning horsemanship and riding. Learn how to groom, tack-up, care for, and ride beautiful horses and ponies at a local ranch.

Red Cross Babysitting Class

Session 1:              June 21-24
Session 2:              July 26-29

Do you want to be a babysitter that people want to hire?  With the Red Cross Babysitting Class, you will learn leadership skills, how to make responsible decisions, identify common safety hazards, and learn how to interview for babysitting jobs.  Included in the course is a workbook, skill cards, hands on practice, and an American Red Cross Authorized Certification.

Taught by Soraya Deen, MA.  Soraya is an American Red Cross certified instructor who provides training on behalf of the American Red Cross to a wide range of clients including the Boy Scouts of America, youth groups, and top corporations.

Foodtastic Cooking Camp for Kids 

Session 1:              June 28-July 1  (6th-8th grade)

Presented by Shari Sack Enrichment Programs:  We're all about the good eats and treats!

Bring your apron and join us for some summertime fun as we chop and stir and mix and measure our way to daily delights that we will enjoy together at the kitchen table!

We will explore cooking and develop cooking skills. We will learn about cleanliness and food handling, the math and science of food in measurement and nutrition, ingredient selection, setting a proper table, etiquette and so much more!

The kids will bring home their own personalized cookbook with the recipes we have made at the final class of the session.

Summer Studies 

Hosted by Chatsworth Hills Academy teachers, this program allows students to enhance and improve their basic academic skills.  Summer Studies is offered each day from 8:00-9:00 a.m.  Math, writing, reading, and other basic skills will be covered as requested by the parent.  This program is a perfect opportunity to  sharpen skills during the summer months when children are not in school.

Workshops offer a culminating event for family and friends each Thursday. This may include sharing activities, a story, or a performance. All workshops focus on enjoying the process of creating and generating ideas from the interests of the students.  Benefits of creative drama include: literacy, critical thinking, problem solving, socialization, self esteem, and global awareness.

 

Creative Drama and Youth Drama Class Descriptions:

 

Creative Drama Workshops provide participant-centered activities which encourage youth to express themselves through the exploration of the five senses: movement, pantomime, story dramatization, role-play, and improvisation! Appropriate for all age levels, Creative Drama promotes individual progression of risk and students are encouraged to grow at their own rate. Lessons may be based on a theme, a concept, or literature.

Creative Drama Kids (Ages 6-8):
All sessions based on a theme also follow the interests of the group and may use elements of visual art to enhance their experience.  Time to play, play, play!

Session 1: Imagination Creations will utilize different images and ideas to spark students' imagination through movement, pantomime, and story dramatization.
Session 2: Earth Explorers allows students to learn, express, and expand their knowledge of the natural world through creative drama.   
Session 3: Imagination Creations 2
There are no limits to what the imagination can create... we just keep creating through fun activities!

Passport to Drama (Ages 9-11):
Join us as we explore cultures around the globe through creative drama! Participate in activities inspired by different countries and cultures including: Japan, China, Germany, and more! Students will have the opportunity to play various roles in the dramatization of stories and folktales from various regions. This workshop helps develop an understanding of story structure.

Improvisation Unleashed 1 & 2 (Ages 12-14):
Join us for theatre games, improvisation, creative character development and more! Be zany, serious, wacky, shy, or bold... just bring yourself!

Drama Divas 1 & 2 (Girls Ages 9-12):
These workshops are created to honor the female spirit, at a time when girls are about to transition to their teen years. Build friendships, confidence, and dramatic skills in a safe, fun environment! Activities may draw inspiration from notable women of the world and encourage self expression.

Adventure Storymakers (Ages 9-12):
Everybody and everything has a story... encourage the mind to find the adventure in every story. Adventure Storymakers will create and act out stories with a beginning, middle, and end. Play lots of parts and have fun! 

Scratch to Stage (Ages 12-14):
Every great play starts from scratch. This workshop offers students an opportunity to create and develop characters and scenes. Learn skills to bring these creations to a performance. Inspiration may come from drama activities, improvisation or the imagination of the participants. Collaborate and share ideas in a safe fun environment!

Fashion Design/Illustration:
The course addresses fashion illustration from the perspectives of both fashion designers and fashion illustrators. As a student you will learn how to create inspiration storyboards and fashion sketching techniques to communicate the ideas, concepts, and details of garments by visually interpreting fashion apparel, including body proportions. This course explores many aspects of fashion illustration from drawing basic fashion figures to producing finished illustrations in color.

Pop Art:
Pop art is an art movement of the twentieth century, characterized by themes and techniques drawn from popular mass culture, such as advertising and comic books. In this course students will create colorful works of art inspired by Pop Artists such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and David Hockney. Each day students will create a finished work of art in the style of Pop Artist icons using various mediums including pastel, watercolor, and collage. This course will also teach basic drawing and rendering techniques.

Papermaking:
Handmade paper is wonderful to touch, both fragile and textured in a way machine pressed paper is not. During this course students will learn the basics of the ancient art of papermaking. Students will create their very own papermaking screen which they will use each day and will be able to take home with them to keep at the end of the workshop. We will explore adding threads of silk and seeds and various other materials to the pulp to create sheets with these embedded into them. Come along and learn while having fun!

Watercolor:
Students will learn a variety of traditional and contemporary watercolor techniques while developing a unique and individual direction in their work. The overall goal of the program is to nurture and develop independent, creative thinking, as well as a dynamic artistic style. Students will also learn about landscape painting and explore non-traditional space, shapes, and color.
